Blueberry Bushes and Gum Disease

Can blueberries prevent the formation of dental plaque that leads to gum disease? Researchers at Université Laval in Canada believe so – and the trials they have performed on tissue infected with gum disease looks very promising.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease, please call Dr. Adam Moore at (919) 772-1811 today to schedule an appointment at our Garner, North Carolina office.

According to researchers, a polyphenol found in lowland wild blueberry bushes has the ability to prevent dental plaque from forming. This same compound has shown to reduce swelling and inflammation caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum, a bacterium that plays a key role in the development of gum disease. While therapeutic uses are still being considered, this extract may one day provide an alternative to more invasive, poorly tolerated treatment options.

Blueberry extract is not currently available in dental products, but you can take steps to prevent gum disease even still. Brushing after every meal and flossing both morning and night, when combined with routine visits to our office, remain the most effective ways to reduce risks and keep your gums at peak health.
