A dental abscess is an accumulation of puss in the tooth, gums, or supporting bone and tissue of the mouth. Abscesses are typically caused by a bacterial infection and can result in tooth loss and other serious oral health problems.

Symptoms of an abscessed tooth include:

  • Localized pain when biting or chewing
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth that does not respond to brushing
  • Fever
  • Difficulties swallowing
  • Lockjaw

These symptoms may also point to other oral health issues and should be brought to the immediate attention of Cary family dentist Dr. Adam Moore.

How is an Abscess Treated?

Tooth abscesses are treated with root canal therapy. With this treatment, Dr. Moore makes a small access hole in the infected tooth through which bacteria and debris can be removed. Once fully cleaned, the tooth is then sealed and covered with a dental crown to help prevent further damage both internally and externally. The process, while often thought of as unpleasant, is no more invasive than a dental filling and can most often be completed in a single office visit.

If you are suffering any of the symptoms of an abscessed tooth, please contact Moore Family Dentistry to schedule an examination today. Dr. Moore welcomes patients from Cary, Garner and surrounding North Carolina communities.

Enamel erosion occurs when the hard, outer layer of the teeth is worn away by acids. Because this layer of teeth is both protective and cosmetic, erosion can have a profound impact on the health and beauty of your smile. Significant erosion will lead to a yellowing of the teeth as dentin becomes exposed. It will also increase risks for tooth decay, infection, and sensitivity.

Many of the dentistry services offered by Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore can be used to address problems brought about by enamel erosion. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call (919) 772-1811 today.

A new study has found that soda and fruit juice are the leading causes of enamel erosion. Like all acidic foods and drinks, these beverages alter the pH balance in the mouth. While saliva naturally counters these variations, frequent consumption of soda and fruit juice prevent this natural protective step from taking place and greatly increase risks for oral health and beauty problems. The best way to counter this risk? Ideally, drinking no more than one of these beverages every two to three days.

Gum disease has long been known to increase risks for a number of serious and even deadly systemic disorders. A new study published in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism suggests much of this has to do with inflammation caused by the bacteria that produce gum disease.

According to the article’s senior author, Thomas Van Dyke of the Forsyth Institute, the bacteria that causes gum disease also causes chronic inflammatory diseases in the arteries. When these bacteria migrate via the bloodstream towards the heart, this inflammation increases risks for stroke, heart attack, and other serious forms of heart disease.

Preventing Serious Issues

Prevention is the best form of defense against gum disease. Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore strongly encourages our patients to brush after every meal and floss at least once a day. Flossing is essential for preventing gum disease and is most effective when done both morning and night.

In addition to your home routine, twice yearly visits to our office allow us to remove tartar build up from below the gum line, helping to prevent bacterial infection. These visits also allow Dr. Moore to detect early signs of gum disease and provide swift treatment before serious issues arise.

Invisalign® treatment can take as little as six months, though this is not always the case. The average length of treatment is closer to between 12 and 24 months but, as with all orthodontic treatments, the duration depends greatly on individual factors. The best way to learn how long your Invisalign treatment will take is through a one-on-one consultation with Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore.

To schedule your Invisalign consultation at our Garner, NC office, please call (919) 772-1811 today.

Benefits Offered by Invisalign

Invisalign can reduce treatment time by one or more years, but this is not the only benefit offered by this advanced orthodontic system. Additional advantages Invisalign offers over braces include:

  • No dietary restrictions
  • No difficulties chewing or speaking
  • No interference with routine dental care
  • No irritation to gums and oral tissue
  • Less visibly obtrusive

These are, of course, not the only advantages Invisalign offers good adult and older teen candidates. Dr. Moore, a Preferred Invisalign Provider, would be happy to answer any specific questions you have about treatment and to further discuss Invisalign vs. braces during your initial consultation.

Dental implants are the strongest and most reliable solution for tooth replacement. This alone is reason to select implants when missing one or more teeth. However, it is far from the only benefit offered by dental implants.

If you are looking for the most effective solution to replace your missing teeth, call Garner implant dentist Dr. Adam Moore at (919) 772-1811 and schedule your initial consultation today.

Understanding Tooth Roots

The roots of your teeth serve multiple functions, one of which is sending signals to the body that bone is needed to support the tooth being secured by the root. When a tooth is missing, its root goes as well, ending these signals and allowing the body to repurpose minerals from that area of the jaw. This results in jaw collapse – an issue that will forever alter the appearance of your face.

Dental implants do not replace missing teeth, they replace missing roots and, in doing so, prevent changes to the structure of the jaw. Implants also provide a nearly indestructible foundation for restorations such as dental crowns that can be shaped, sized, and colored to flawlessly perfect your smile.

If your children love chewing gum, you may be excited to lean about a new study from the University of Groningen in Holland. According to the study’s authors, chewing gum for 10 minutes after eating can remove up to 100 million bacteria from the mouth – bacteria that is linked to bad breath, tooth, decay, and gum disease. Maybe now is a good time to start encouraging your children to chew sugar-free gum after eating – in the interest of oral health, of course.

However, before you encourage nonstop chomping of gum, keep this in mind: the study’s authors found 10 minutes to be the optimal amount of time to chew gum after eating. Any more and the bacteria are re-deposited onto the teeth.

Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore encourages children to take a combined approach for optimal oral health. This can absolutely include the chewing of sugar-free gum, but must also include brushing and flossing at least twice a day, and routine visits to our office for cleanings and check-ups. If you or your children have questions about fun ways to maintain oral health, Dr. Moore would be happy to address those during your next appointment.
