Flossing is the most effective way to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria from in between teeth. It is also one of the best defenses against gum disease, tooth infection, and other serious dental health issues.

Despite the claims of some mouthwashes and toothpastes, and the innovative designs and features of certain toothbrushes, there is simply nothing that can reduce the need to floss. Fortunately, flossing is a relatively simple activity and, once you are accustomed to it, one that can be completed in next to no time at all.

During your next cleaning and examination at our Garner, North Carolina office we would be happy to discuss proper flossing technique and to help you make this important step a daily part of your oral hygiene routine.

When to Floss

Flossing can be done before or after brushing every morning and night. Once a day is a good start, but twice a day can better ensure optimal oral health. Depending on the spacing of your teeth, certain types of floss may better meet your needs. Dr. Moore can help you understand your options and which can best meet your needs during your next appointment.

To schedule your next appointment at Moore Family Dentistry, please contact us today. We welcome patients of all ages from Garner, Cary, and surrounding North Carolina communities.

The American Dental Association has teamed up with Hermey the Elf to help kids (and their parents) maintain optimal oral health this Holiday Season. You may remember Hermey as the elf in the classic TV special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer who preferred studying teeth to making toys. It is this devotion to oral health that makes Hermey the perfect character to inspire kids keep teeth clean both during the holidays and throughout the year.

Garner, North Carolina family dentist Dr. Adam Moore encourages parents to assist young children in developing good oral habits. During your routine visits to our office he would be happy to discuss age-appropriate teaching tools that can help you more effectively instruct your children. In the meantime, check out Hermey’s Healthy Teeth Checklist from the ADA for a fun and simple way to encourage children to take charge of their dental care.

Hermey’s suggestions include brushing twice a day, eating healthy snacks, and wearing a mouthguard when playing sports. Dr. Moore would add flossing at least once daily to this list for older children, adolescents, and adults.

Osseointegration is the process through which osteoblasts secure to a dental implant, making it a permanent part of the jaw. This process allows for many of the advantages of dental implants such as a secure hold and the prevention of jaw shrinkage and collapse. However, patients who take SSRIs may have troubles generating osteoblasts, which may increase the risk of implant failure.

A new study conducted by the International and American Associations for Dental Research has found patients taking SSRIs see implant failure at twice the rate as those not taking these medications – a number similar to that experienced by smokers. This six year study of 916 dental implants in 490 patients found a failure rate of 10.6 percent among patients taking SSRIs. While this is still a relatively small percentage, SSRI use may interfere with you candidacy for this procedure.

Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore takes multiple things into consideration when recommending tooth replacement options. This is why it is important that you disclose your entire medical history, including medications you are now or have previously taken, during your dental implant consultation. If this treatment is not right for you, Dr. Moore will happily discuss alternatives that can restore strength and beauty to your smile.

To learn if dental implants are right for you, please contact Moore Family Dentistry and schedule a consultation today. Dr. Moore proudly serves Garner and all surrounding North Carolina communities.

It’s common knowledge that the calcium in dairy products can help keep teeth strong. However, many people are unaware that the probiotics found in cultured dairy products such as yogurt and kefir are also beneficial for gum health.

In a double-blind, placebo controlled study it was found that probiotics improved the efficacy of scaling and root planing for the treatment of gum disease by 53 percent. This percentage is very similar to that offered by antibiotics, which may allow probiotics to be a suitable alternative for those who are sensitive to antibiotics or choose to avoid them for medical reasons.

Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore suggests taking a combined approach in the prevention and treatment of oral health issues. Adding probiotics, either through increased consumption of fermented and cultured foods or by taking a pill, has been shown to have significant oral and systemic health benefits. This should not, however, be seen as an alternative to a daily routine of brushing and flossing. During your next regularly scheduled cleaning and examination, Dr. Moore would be happy to discuss how best to maintain peak oral health now and well into the future.

Four-Star Ranking Recognizes Positive Reviews from Moore Smiles Patients

GARNER, N.C. — Moore Smiles Today was recently recognized for its commitment to customer service with a “Talk of the Town” Customer Satisfaction Award for 2013.

The dental team at Moore Smiles Today earned a four-star rating in customer satisfaction for 2013, based on research and data from user-review and business-review websites, social networks, business-rating services, and industry resources.

The scores are averaged by hand, according to Susan Singer, awards coordinator at Celebration Media, to ensure the most accurate representation of a company’s customer service.

“Moore Smiles Today received many positive reviews, which is why it was given the highest rating of four stars,” Singer said. “We love to see the type of high praise Moore Smiles regularly receives online.”

Each company monitored by Celebration Media receives one rating for the year. Moore Smiles Today also received the “Talk of the Town” Customer Satisfaction Award in 2012.

“It’s always great to hear our customers are out there sharing their good experiences online,” said Dr. Adam Moore. “We love helping our patients create and maintain beautiful smiles. They are the reason we are in business.”

GARNER, N.C. — Dr. Adam Moore recently earned a special credential from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Dental Implants are the best way to replace a lost tooth. The implants are titanium screws that can be placed into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. Crowns and bridges can then be attached to the implants to replace the missing teeth.

Unlike a bridge, the implant will sit on its own, not resting on or connected to other teeth, and the appearance is much more natural. The result is also far more comfortable than dentures, which can slide around and make eating difficult.

“Taking the time to earn the fellowship status was an important part of making sure I offer my patients not only the latest technology, but the latest techniques to improve comfort and care,” Moore said. “I’m proud to be named a fellow by such a prestigious organization that works hard to educate people about dental implants.”
